Conservative /Liberal Democrat first 100 days review

Congratulations

Our best wishes to Samantha and David Cameron on the arrival of their new baby.

Coalition

The Coalition of Conservatives and Liberal Democrats has completed its first 100 days.  The plan is for a fixed term Parliament of five years.  It will take this time to get the economy back into balance, and to implement the ambitious plans that Conservatives have been forming for the last five years.

What a relief.

We now have a Government that knows how to manage the economy.  Three times since the war Labour has left our economy in tatters, and three times the Conservatives have had to build it up again.

After 100 days George Osborne has set a new sense of direction.  We shall start to reduce the frightening deficit that we inherited.  It threatened the country, it was far worse than the Labour Administration had admitted, and amounted to £166 billion.  We were living beyond our means, and are now faced with several years of austerity.  At least now we are facing up to the problem, while Labour were mesmerised, and doing nothing, hoping that the debt would somehow go away.

On 17th of August he said:-      “In the space of 100 days we have:

 Completed a review of in-year public spending and found over £6bn of savings;

  • Established the OBR to audit the state of the public finances and provide unbiased forecasts;
  • Set a fiscal mandate to eliminate the structural current deficit by the end of the parliament;
  • Delivered a Budget which proved to the world that Britain now has the will, the determination and the resolve to live within her means. “

See full speech.  (Link)Conservative/Speeches.

Foreign Affairs

William Hague set out our approach to Foreign affairs, in a speech he made at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office on the 1st of July.  He said:-

“I will set out how we will deliver a distinctive British Foreign policy that extends our global reach and influence, that is agile and energetic in a networked world, that uses diplomacy to secure our prosperity, that builds up significantly strengthened bilateral relations for Britain, that harnesses the appeal of our culture and heritage to promote our values, and that sets out to make the most of the abundant opportunities of the 21st century systematically and for the long-term. So for the first time in years Britain will have a foreign policy that is clear, focused and effective.”

His speech lays out in a systematic way how we will manage foreign affairs in future, to the benefit of UK and the world in general.   Well worth a read.  See the full text at  (Link) Same.

David Cameron makes first visit to Afghanistan as Prime Minister

David Cameron

Prime Minister David Cameron has paid tribute to British troops, and pledged to give them more operational and personal support.

Cameron flew into Afghanistan yesterday for talks with President Hamid Karzai, before staying at Camp Bastion overnight and speaking to the troops today.

“What you are doing here will never be forgotten, it is great and important work. You are incredibly brave and professional in what you do”, he said.

“I stand here as your Prime Minister, wanting to tell you from the bottom of my heart that you should be proud of yourselves and what you do because your country is incredibly proud of you.”

Cameron confirmed that the British soldiers’ operational allowance, which currently stands at £2,380 for a six-month tour, will be doubled. The increase will come into force from next month and be backdated to the date of the general election.

He also pledged an additional £67m to help counter improvised explosive devices – plus additional funding for policing, education, jobs and governance reform in Afghanistan.

During his speech to the troops, he highlighted the importance of the military covenant, saying he wanted to put troops “front and centre of our national life again”.

“I want you to help me create a new atmosphere in our country, an atmosphere in which we back and revere and support our military,” he said, as he read out a message of support from the England football coach Fabio Capello and the England team.

“I want you to think of that great quotation that it’s not the politician that brings the right to vote, it is the soldier, it is not the poet that brings free speech, it is the soldier, it is not the journalist that brings free expression, it is the soldier”.

“So I want you to help me create a new atmosphere in our country, an atmosphere where we back and revere and support our military.”

What happens under One Minute of Labour Government

We now have just 10 days until the election. Just 10 days, after 13 years of this Labour Government.

Many people have still to make up their minds how to vote. Our message to people is simple: let’s change Britain for the better.

Let’s stop Labour’s jobs tax that will kill the recovery. Let’s cut benefits for those who refuse work. Let’s fund new NHS cancer drugs. Let’s have a National Citizen Service for 16 year olds. Let’s restore discipline in schools. And let’s scrap ID cards.

It’s clear that only a decisive Conservative victory can bring real change. Every vote for Labour and the Lib Dems could leave us stuck with Gordon Brown in No.10 – or the uncertainty of a hung Parliament which could kill the recovery.

So with 10 days left it’s vital that we all roll up our sleeves and campaign for every vote. It doesn’t matter if you’ve never done it before – anyone can do their bit by following these 10 simple steps.

The first 5 are simple ways to get involved on-the-ground locally – and we’ve created this short form to help you contact your local campaign team. The other 5 can be done right now whilst you’re online.

Volunteer your time

1. Deliver leaflets – Posting leaflets through doors is one of the easiest and most important things you can do to help your local campaign. You can do it socially as a group or just stick some music on and get on with it.

2. Door-to-door canvassing – Of course, you can’t beat having a one-to-one chat with local people about who they’re planning to vote for. It’s really straightforward and you’ll get lots of support from experienced campaigners if you’ve never done it before.

3. Ring voters – Another way of talking directly to voters is giving them a ring. It’s really easy to do. You can either telecanvass from your local campaign office, get list of numbers to ring from home, or join one of the many telecavassing campaigns on MyConservatives.

4. Put up a poster or placard – With just days before people go to the polls it’s time to nail your colours to the mast. Your local campaign team will be happy to provide you with anything from a small window poster to a large placard if you have a garden. We’ve also uploaded a few Conservative posters to our website for you to download and print.

POSTER: We're all in this together POSTER: Vote for Change POSTER: Big Society, Not Big Government

5. Do some “telling” at the polling station – On 6th May, it will be vital to have Conservative volunteers at the polling stations. Tellers play a key role in the Get Out The Vote operation by working out which of our supporters have voted.

6. Donate £10 – Small online donations are crucial to helping us combat the Lib Dems and to take the fight to Labour in new seats that are now winnable. Please give just £10 to our campaign by contributing to our Pound A Day campaign or by donating directly to one of our candidates on MyConservatives.

7. Join us on Facebook – Signing up to the Facebook pages for the Conservatives and David Cameron is a simple way of showing your support. It also helps you to keep updated on the latest campaign news, videos and picture galleries.

8. Share this video1 Minute of Labour is a very short, simple video about the choice we face at this election. Watch it, share it with your friends, and check out our other great videos on YouTube.

WATCH: 1 Minute Of Labour

9. Fight back against scaremongering – Last week David Cameron challenged Gordon Brown over Labour’s scare tactics. Some of you have already been sending in examples of their misleading leaflets – if you see one do send us a copy of it so that we can fight back against them.

10. Send this email to 10 friends – Last but not least – don’t just do these things yourself, encourage others to do them as well. Click here to forward this email to just 10 people – we need all hands on deck for the last 10 days of campaigning. Will your friends really want to wake up on 7th May to another 5 years of Gordon Brown?

So there we have it, 10 ways to make a difference in the 10 days we have left.

Together, we really can bring the change our country needs.

Thank you for your support.

Liberal Democrats use fake nurse and policeman

First the Liberal Democrats had a fake nurse in their election literature, now a fake policeman

Last week the Liberal Democrats in Wales got a researcher who had never been a nurse to dress up as a nurse for an election leaflet. Today we learn that the photo of their Welsh leader – talking to a policeman – is also fake. The BBC has the report.

Lib Dems stage ‘fake PC’ photo

The Lib Dems’ Welsh manifesto shows leader Kirsty Williams apparently speaking to a police officer – but he is not one

Welsh Liberal Democrats have defended using a “model” dressed as a police officer in a photo with leader Kirsty Williams in their manifesto.

It is the second time in a week that the Welsh Lib Dems have admitted using stand-ins in photographs.

The party said the photo was “illustrative” and that it would not be detailing the identity of the stand-in.

Last week Cardiff North candidate John Dixon used a Lib Dem researcher dressed as a nurse in an election leaflet.

The leaflet showed him talking to a woman in nurse’s uniform who was actually a researcher for Lib Dem Assembly Member Mick Bates.

This leaflet picture showed a Lib Dem candidate speaking to a researcher dressed as a nurse

The photograph with Ms Williams appeared on page 35 of their general election manifesto in a section promising more officers on the beat.

Explaining the rationale for using such photographs, a Lib Dem spokesperson said: “Photos like these are used for illustrative purposes as it is obviously difficult for some serving members of the police force or the health service to appear in general election literature.”

The party said that the use of such “illustrative photographs” was strictly limited to the policy areas of health and policing.

The spokesperson said: “In our election communication, we only used illustrative photographs to highlight our commitment to improving the NHS and increasing the number of police on our streets.”

The party stressed that Ms Williams was not “complicit in the impersonation of a police officer”.

‘No impersonation’

The spokesperson said: “There has been no such impersonation. Being photographed dressed in a way that illustrates the police service, does not in any way represent impersonating a police officer, so there is nothing to be complicit in.”

We don’t intend to divulge the identity of the model for obvious reasons as it would potentially cause a lot of media intrusion for the individual concerned
Welsh Liberal Democrats

However, a Welsh Conservative Party spokesperson said: “We were under the impression impersonating a police officer is a criminal offence.”

He added: “It would seem the Lib Dems’ support for law and order is purely ‘illustrative’ – just as it was last week when they used a fake nurse to promote their claims of support for the NHS.

“The Liberals talk about being an ‘honest partner’ at this election. Yet twice in three days they’ve been caught out trying to mislead the public.”

Tories said they were not aware of any such examples in their own election literature, and that each election publication was the responsibility of each election agent.

‘Fireman Sam’

A spokesman for Plaid Cymru said: “We can confirm that we don’t dress up members of staff or supporters in uniforms to pretend that we’re talking to real policemen or nurses – we prefer to talk to the real thing.”

Plaid also told BBC Wales: “It’s pretty worrying that the Lib Dems leader appears to be getting advice on law and order from and actor or member of staff dressed up as a policeman, however we’re not surprised by this latest leaflet – everyone knows that the Lib Dems are a party willing to do just about anything to get votes.”

“They have also tried to dress Nick Clegg up as someone who cares about Wales – and clearly that’s not true.”

A spokesperson for Welsh Labour said: “First a fake nurse, then a fake policeman – what’s next, a picture with Fireman Sam?

‘Media intrusion’

“Everyone knows that the Lib Dems will do absolutely anything for a vote, from their dodgy graphs to make-believe photos, they have always been the shameless chancers of Welsh politics.”

Lib Dems said they would not reveal the identity of the stand-in police officer.

“We don’t intend to divulge the identity of the model for obvious reasons as it would potentially cause a lot of media intrusion for the individual concerned and is not material to the issue,” the party spokesperson said.

Eric Pickles: Labour’s shameful lies

Eric Pickles

The Conservatives have further exposed Labour’s scare tactics by producing twenty-three examples of Labour’s scaremongering leaflets.

In the TV debate last night Gordon Brown denied that he had any knowledge of the lies and scare tactics his MPs have been using in their campaign literature.

At a press conference today Eric Pickles and Michael Gove published 23 examples of Labour leaflets peddling lies about Conservative Party policies. The examples of leaflets containing Labour’s shameful lies include no fewer than five Minsters plus Gordon Brown’s own Parliamentary Private Secretary.

Conservative Party Chairman Eric Pickles said Labour have been “caught spreading poisonous lies about the Conservative Party”.

“Gordon Brown denied giving the go ahead for these leaflets, but with his own ministers using them in their local campaigns his comments are shown up to be complete and utter rubbish.”

Click here to see the leaflets

“Last night, when he was confronted over these lies, the Prime Minister said that he had not authorised these leaflets”, said Michael Gove. “But today we have the proof that shows he was talking nonsense”.

“Labour have been peddling these allegations against the Conservatives for years and we now have the evidence that his own ministers were at the forefront of this smear campaign”.

Gove called on Brown to “rebuke his colleagues, insist that these leaflets are withdrawn and apologise to the electors in these seats”.

“Labour’s campaign has so far been based on fear and smear, they have nothing new to offer the British people and, on that basis, they have forfeited the right to govern.”

The scare tactics have also featured on Labour’s website and in a Labour election broadcast.

Scottish Conservative Leader Annabel Goldie: A vote for the Conservatives is a vote for change

Speaking today at the launch of the Scottish Conservative Manifesto for the British General Election, Annabel Goldie MSP, Scottish Conservative Leader, says

Can I first of all say how great it is to be in the constituency of Berwickshire, Roxburgh and Selkirk.

This Constituency is a great place to launch our manifesto for Scotland. It is exactly the type of seat we are determined to win to ensure we have a strong Conservative Government. Strong government is vital if we are to make the tough decisions to lead us out of the terrible mess that Labour has made of our finances. We don’t need a hung parliament. The priority must be the best interests of the country not the self interest of political parties haggling over deals.

Here in Berwickshire, Roxburgh and Selkirk, John Lamont is doing an amazing job. He is an outstanding candidate. His work-rate and his local popularity are phenomenal. Good luck John. You’ve won this seat once. Now is the time to win it again.

And who will you beat in this seat? A Liberal Democrat – a Liberal Democrat who wants to take this country into the Euro and have an immigrants’ amnesty.

A Liberal Democrat whose party wants to let violent criminals go free and give the vote to the criminals they do lock up.
A Liberal Democrat whose leader rules out a rise in VAT but whose finance spokesman says they can’t rule out a rise in VAT.
A Liberal Democrat who wants to scrap our nuclear weapons when dangerous countries around the world are building their own.

A Liberal Democrat whose leader says a recession can be liberating – tell that to the thousands who have lost their jobs. Some liberation.
A Liberal Democrat whose party’s idea of patriotism when Britain asks Iceland for our money back, is to encourage Iceland to sue Britain.
Of course some of these Lib Dem policies will come as a complete or should that be shocking surprise to voters and commentators. Many people have no idea what their policies are, many people within the Lib Dems have no idea what their policies are. And that’s how they like it, all things to all people and no unwelcome exposure of policy.
I passionately hope that John Lamont in Berwickshire, Roxburgh and Selkirk; Alex Johnstone in West Aberdeenshire and Kincardine; Gary Mulvaney in Argyll and Bute and all our other candidates win against the Lib Dems. Because if we want to get rid of this tired and failing Labour Government then voting Lib Dem will put that at risk. Don’t forget – the Lib Dems have a history of propping up Labour governments. If you vote Lib Dem you get Labour. Simple.
Now I understand why people are thinking of voting Lib Dem. The Liberal Democrats have been very effective at telling people what they want to hear. But let me tell you, their policies change depending on which part of the country they are in and which doorstep they are on.
So on the one hand they say they will scrap Trident but then they tell others they will keep it and the 11,000 defence jobs at Faslane are safe. To some they say no to free prescriptions – to others they say yes. And yet they talk about honesty and a different type of politics. Everyone wants that, no one political party has the monopoly on that virtuous aspiration and to pretend otherwise is bunkum.
If you want to know what the Conservatives stand for it is here in this manifesto. It is a manifesto for a party wanting to secure government. It is brimming with ideas, policies, vision for the future.
On the economy we have the credible plan to get Britain working again. We will scrap Labour’s tax on jobs. 7 out of 10 working Scots will be better off and none will be worse off than under Labour. £63 million will be saved for front line services in Scotland. That means more teachers, more life saving drugs for patients, better services for people who need them.

Already we have shown in Scotland that the Conservatives can rise to the challenge and get things done. We cut the local business rates of tens of thousands of businesses and saved thousands of jobs. If this is what we can do in opposition in Scotland just think what a David Cameron led Government could do at Westminster.
This manifesto is not just about May 6th. It is a work in progress, a manifesto on which we shall build as we head towards next years Scottish Parliament elections.
On devolved matters the SNP Government may not be able to keep their own promises but we have forced them to keep Conservative ones.
1,000 extra police on our streets, thanks to the Conservatives.
A new drugs strategy, thanks to the Conservatives.

£60 million for Town Centre Regeneration projects all across Scotland, thanks to the Conservatives.
And we will be pressing in the future for 2 more years of the Council Tax freeze having delivered it for the last 3 years.
On health we are the only party to commit to protecting the NHS budget, we will tackle the post-code lottery on life-saving drugs through NI savings and we want to pilot GP walk-in centres so people can see a GP when it is convenient for them.
On education we are setting out plans to introduce second chance centres to tackle persistently unruly pupils and allow the well behaved majority to study uninterrupted.

On crime we want to end automatic early release and clamp down on knife crime.
We have the ideas and the vision. We are running a positive campaign because we have something to say. People are taking us seriously in Scotland because they have seen what a difference we can make and they like it.
And what are they getting from Labour? Smears, distortions of the truth, negative campaigning. They are fighting the battles of the past because they are losing the arguments of today and have nothing to offer for the future.
And the SNP. Still living in fantasy land. Still telling the world that an independent Scotland would be immune from the global recession. Alex Salmond still failing to tighten his belt. His Health Secretary saying there will be savage cuts in health spending and Alex Salmond saying there will be an increase in health spending. They are just not taking this British General Election seriously. Alex Salmond is not even standing.
And in return the Scottish public are not taking the SNP seriously because they are just not at the races at this British General Election. A vote for the SNP, or for the Liberal Democrats, is a vote for five more years of Labour waste, Labour debt and Labour tax hikes.
A vote for the Conservatives is a vote for change. It is a positive vote, a vote for optimism and hope. Every vote, every constituency, every Conservative MP is vital if we want to win this election. And we can win in Scotland. Don’t let anyone tell you we can’t. Candidates right across the country are well placed to win. People see us once again as a viable alternative. And we need to continue to persuade them to be part of that and vote for change.

And if you vote for change you will get David Cameron as your next Prime Minister.

Scottish Conservatives attack Liberal Democrats

Scots Tories launch manifesto

The Tories have launched their General Election manifesto for Scotland with an attack on the Liberal Democrats.

Scottish Conservative leader Annabel Goldie said votes for the Lib Dems would lead to a Labour government.

The Conservatives, who won one Scottish seat at the last UK election, aim to return 11 Scottish MPs on 6 May.

Their manifesto, which was launched in Melrose in the Scottish Borders, also contains a series of pledges for the 2011 Scottish Parliament election.

ELSEWHERE IN THE ELECTION

Melrose is in the Tory target seat of Berwickshire, Roxburgh and Selkirk, which neighbours the party’s only Scottish constituency – the Dumfriesshire, Clydesdale and Tweeddale seat was won by David Mundell with a majority of just over 1,000.

The manifesto launch began with a DVD presentation showing David Cameron saying the country’s history spins on a “single day of destiny”.

In a strong attack on the Liberal Democrats, Miss Goldie said: “Many people have no idea what their policies are, many people within the Lib Dems have no idea what their policies are.”

She said: “We don’t need a hung parliament.

“The priority must be the best interests of the country not the self interest of political parties haggling over deals.”

She added: “If we want to get rid of this tired and failing Labour government then voting Lib Dem will put that at risk. Don’t forget – the Lib Dems have a history of propping up Labour governments.”

Miss Goldie described the Conservative manifesto as a “work in progress” as it looks to the Scottish elections next year as well as Westminster.

She said SNP First Minister Alex Salmond was failing to tighten his “substantial belt” on public spending.

However, the party promised to protect the health service and said Labour’s tax proposals would take £20m a year from frontline NHS services.

Ms Goldie said: “We are the only party to commit to protecting the NHS budget, we will tackle the post-code lottery on life-saving drugs through NI savings and we want to pilot GP walk-in centres so people can see a GP when it is convenient for them.”

‘Something to say’

Ms Goldie said gains made in previous Scottish budgets, such as 1,000 extra police officers and rates relief schemes for small businesses, had to be protected.

“We have the ideas and the vision. We are running a positive campaign because we have something to say.

“People are taking us seriously in Scotland because they have seen what a difference we can make and they like it.”

She added: “And what are they getting from Labour? Smears, distortions of the truth, negative campaigning.”

Ms Goldie also accused the SNP of “not taking this general election seriously”.

David Mundell told party supporters the manifesto offered a “progressive vision”.

“I challenge anyone to say that this manifesto isn’t bold, ambitious, forward looking, radical,” he said.

He added: “This manifesto is our positive case for government to the people of Scotland. It is our positive case for change.

“It is brimming with ideas. There is a coherent vision of a society where people are empowered instead of big government.”

Conservatives – An invitation to older people

David Cameron

David Cameron has launched the Older People Manifesto - an important addition to the Big Society agenda.

The Manifesto unveils policies designed to appeal to the older community in Britain, placing them at the centre of the political narrative and continuing David Cameron’s pledge to champion the great ignored.

“I want to bring older generations right into the mainstream of our national life”, Cameron said in a speech today. “Yes, to treat them with respect and kindness, and to give them the dignity and security they deserve - but also to call on their wisdom and values”.

Click here to download the Older People Manifesto

Read David’s speech in full

The Manifesto highlights:

1. Work and equality.
Work to stop discrimination against older people and introduce better support for older workers who lose their jobs, by:

  • Looking at how to end the retirement age to promote fairness in the workplace.
  • Scrapping the effective obligation to buy an annuity by age 75, to give people greater control over their finances.
  • Providing specialist back-to-work support for the over 50s.

2. Greater financial security.
Protect pensioners’ benefits and create new forms of help to promote more independence and security, by:

  • Protecting key benefits: the Winter Fuel Allowance, free bus passes, free TV licences and the pension credit. And unlike Labour, we will not scrap Attendance Allowance or Disability Living Allowance for the over 65s.
  • Providing a better basic state pension by linking it to earnings in 2012.
  • Freezing council tax for two years in partnership with local councils, saving a typical Band D pensioner household over £200 a year.
  • Giving more help to lower fuel bills through a ‘green deal’, helping to tackle fuel poverty.

3. Health and independence.
Health and social care that is fairer and more flexible, reducing the increasing isolation and vulnerability of elderly people, by:

  • Health and social care that is fairer and more flexible, reducing the increasing isolation and vulnerability of elderly people, by:
  • Protecting NHS spending so it has the resources it needs to meet people’s rising expectations about the quality of care they should receive.
  • Providing single budgets, combining social and health funding, to give older people direct control over the care they receive.
  • Scrapping Labour’s jobs tax, and using the £200 million a year this will save the NHS to create a Cancer Drugs Fund – making sure that everyone has access to the cancer drugs their doctors think will help them.
  • Devolving public health budgets, so communities can spend money to prevent older people getting ill in the first place.
  • Making sure that no-one is forced to sell their own home to pay their care home fees.
  • Delivering better palliative care to people at the end of their lives.

4. Family and community.
Greater recognition of the important role that older people and grandparents play in their communities, and more opportunities for older people to take a more active part in building a stronger, more family-friendly society, by:

  • Greater recognition of the important role that older people and grandparents play in their communities, and more opportunities for older people to take a more active part in building a stronger, more family-friendly society, by:
  • Getting older people involved in new programmes of civic action and volunteering, at the vanguard of a new army of activists who will help build the Big Society.
  • Creating new powers for local communities to save community assets, like post offices, that are of great value to older people.
  • Giving greater rights to grandparents after parental break-up or in cases where a child needs to be taken into care.
